CPI(M) leader, JMM candidate killed in Purulia

Purulia (WB) (PTI): Ahead of next month's panchayat polls, a local leader of the CPI(M) was allegedly shot dead by Maoists while a JMM candidate was allegedly killed by CPI(M) cadres in Purulia district.

Khetrapal Kumar (34), a member of CPI(M)'s Arsha local committee, was busy in a meeting for the panchayat election at a house in Rangameta when the Maoists snapped power supply to the house and fired, police said.

Kumar, a school teacher and resident of Fasco village near Ranagameta, was felled by four bullets.

He had been in the hit list of the Maoists who had ealier warned him to quit CPI(M).

Earlier in the evening, a panchayat poll candidate of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha was hacked to death and his two sons injured allegedly by ruling CPI(M) cadres at Raibgandh, police said.

The two sides were reportedly involved in an altercation over alleged non-payment of actual wages in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in the area.

JMM state committee secretary Ajit Prasad Mahto said their party nominee, Rameswar Mahto (57) was murdered by CPI(M) cadres.

Panchayat polls would be held in the district on May 11.
