‘People’s March’ magazine banned by Ekm district administration

KOZHIKODE: People’s March magazine, which is suspected to be the unofficial mouthpiece of the CPI (Maoist), has been banned by Ernakulam district administration.

The notice announcing the ban of the magazine was pasted on the door of the house of P.Govindan Kutty, the editor of the magazine, at Thripunithura on February 14.

Govindan Kutty has been in jail after he was picked up by the police on December 19, on sedition charges. He was released on bail the other day.

He came to know about the ban only on Thursday when he went to his house at Tripunithura.

Ernakulam District Collector banned ‘People’s March’ following a report given by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Thrikkakara) in this regard.

The district administration found that the magazine contained seditious material.

The Additional District Magistrate has written to the Registrar of Newspapers, India, requesting for an all-India ban on the magazine.

The Centre banned the website of ‘People’s March’ on May, 2006, as part of the drive against pro-Maoist websites and blogs. Since then, ‘People’s March’ has been uploaded into peoplemarch. googlepages.com.

Police initiated action against Govindan Kutty after the arrest of CPI (Maoist) central committee member Malla Raja Reddy on December 17. Govindan Kutty was on an hunger strike till he was released on bail.

‘People’s March’ was published from Kolkata and New Delhi before it was shifted to Kochi. The magazine is printed, published and owned by Govindan Kutty.

After his release on bail, Govindan Kutty has said that he will continue publishing the magazine till it is banned.

The magazine has published extensive reports on the Maoist movements in various part of the country.

One article on the last issue was on the developmental activities carried out by the Maoists in the Dandakaranya region.

Protests:

Meanwhile, human rights activists and writers have condemned the ban on the magazine.

Poet and activist from Andhra Pradesh Varavara Rao told this website’s newspaper over phone that there cannot be a blanket ban on a magazine.

Deputy general secretary of the Revolutionary Democratic Front (RDF)G.N.Sai Baba said that the ban was an undemocratic and fascist act.

“If the government finds things which are against its policies it should go for a debate rather than banning a magazine.”

Porattam general convener M.N.Ravunny urged all mediapesons to come forward and condemn the attack on the freedom of the press

I was released from prison today, Sunday 24th February, 2008..................

I was released from prison today around noon.

I thank the print and mass media in extending their support for my struggle in prison.

I thank the civil and democratic rights organizations, Kerala Working journalists union, Advocates P.A. Pauran, Madhusudan in extending legal assistance, Arundati Roy, Girish Karnad, Maheshwata Devi in exposing my cause.

People's March publication will be resumed as early as possible.

Normally police seize only the hard disks of any computer. In My case they seized the whole C.P.U., Monitor, Key Board, Mouse, Speakers everything. I have to buy everything as the seized items will be returned only after the closure of the case by court.

Normally police seize only the SIM card. In my case police seized the mobile itself.

That means I have to spend money for a computer and mobile.

The owners of the printing press which prints People's March were threatened by police. They refuse to print People's March. These are he problems before the People's March. Even though People's March is a Registered Newspaper registered under the Registrar of Newspapers for India.

Liberal financial assistance is the need of the hour to resume People's March publication.

Govindan Kutty freed from jail

P. Govindan Kutty coming out of Central Prison, Viyyur, Thrissur, on Sunday.

THRISSUR: `People’s March’ magazine editor P.Govindan Kutty was released from Viyyur Central Prison here on Sunday.

He was arrested on December 19 for his alleged connection with the banned CPI (Maoist) party.

His release follows the conditional bail granted by the Kerala High Court the other day.

Talking to mediapersons here on Sunday, Govindan Kutty alleged that he was arrested without any evidence.

He alleged that the arrest was in retaliation by the government against the articles published by him in his magazine exposing corruption and injustice in various government departments.

“If what is published in my magazine is antinational, the authorities should have banned the magazine. But so far the magazine has not been banned and I will continue to publish the magazine”, he said.

He said that he was not a Maoist, but he accepted the Maoist ideology. He said that he would continue to propagate the Maoist ideology.

He said that he did not want to be called a nationalist, but he was not an anti-national. He said that he was a praja snehi.

Bail for Marad accused

THIS SCALE WE ARE USING FROM A LONG TIME FOR NOTHING

Marad religious criminals got Bail today but Govindan Kutty still in prison.Marad accused got bail because they are ill and Old.What about Kutty ?He never do any harm to any one.

Kochi: The State government on Monday strongly opposed the bail petitions filed by 27 accused in jail in connection with the Marad massacre case.

The government, however, said it had no objection to bail being granted to Abbas, one of the accused who has cancer.

The submission on behalf of the government was made by Director-General of Prosecution (DGP) P.G. Thampi when the bail petitions came up before Justice R. Basant.

While opposing the bail pleas, Mr. Thampi said there was ample evidence to indicate that the accused had hatched a conspiracy with others.

If they were released on bail, communal harmony would be in peril. Besides, the accused would go into hiding.

In a statement, Mr. Thampi said the evidence against the petitioners clearly established the role played by each accused. Their intention was to get bail to evade the final verdict.
Concern expressed

Justice R. Basant expressed concern over the manner in which investigation was conducted into two spirit seizure cases.

The judge criticised the investigation when the bail petition filed by the accused in the two cases came up for hearing.

The bail petition was filed by Sandeep who was arrested in connection with the seizure of large quantities of spirit from Thrissur. The other petition seeking anticipatory bail was filed by Surendran.

He feared that he would be arrested as the lorry seized by the police along with the spirit was owned by him. Though he had filed a complaint before a magistrate that his vehicle was missing, the police did not investigate the case properly.
Directive to petitioner

A Bench comprising Justice P.R. Raman and Justice V.K. Mohanan asked a petitioner who complained about lack of facilities for women pilgrims at Sabarimala to move the court in the next festival season as the present Mandalam-Makaravillaku festival was over.

In her petition, Lekha Suresh of Vypeen said no facilities had been provided by the Travancore Devaswom Board for women at Pampa and Triveni to take holy dips.

The board had not provided any resting place for women.

The condition of urinals at the Sannidhanam was deplorable, she said.

Maoist bloggers seek release of People’s March editor

T’PURAM: As the wait of arrested Maoist leader and People’s March editor P Govindankutty for bail continues, the human rights activists standing for his cause have found unexpected support from different parts of the world.

The Communist Party of Greece (Marxist-Leninist) strongly condemned the arrest of Govindankutty and demanded his immediate and unconditional release.

In a statement issued on pro-Maoist websites and blogs, the party `expressed solidarity to Indian comrades and to the people of India who are being subjected to state terror by the Government Of India’.

“The governments and the imperialists all over the world are trying to gag the progressive and revolutionary individuals, organisations and parties. They are trying to keep the people in the dark, to stop them from organising themselves and fighting back,” said the statement issued by Chris Mais of the International bureau of CPG (ML).

The arrest of Govindankutty 33 days ago and his hunger strike in prison and medical college are hotly debated on blogs and websites.

The statement in www.aworldtowin.com, a hot site for the extreme leftists, also condemned the arrest of Govindankutty. It asked the government to allow People’s March to resume publication in the country.

There are blogs like maoist resistance .blogspot.com, peoplemovementsupportgroup.blogspot.com and goodmorningrev. wordpress.com, which had also been debating the Govindankutty issue seriously. All information from the arrest to the progress of legal battle in the Kerala High Court are available on these sites.

“The support we receive from human rights activists across the globe is really soothening. We expect that the High Court would deliver an order that will uphold the human rights on Wednesday,” said an activist who is part of the team that carries out the legal battle in defence of Govindankutty.

THRISSUR: P.Govindiankutty, who is on remand in Viyyur prison here, has been shifted to the Medical College Hospital here following deterioration of his health condition. He was arrested from Aluva on December 19.

He was fasting since December 20 in the prison and the human rights activists who visited him in the prison on Tuesday alleged that the prison authorities were indulging in forcible feeding of glucose after tying his hands and legs.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued here, the state committee of the Kerala Human Rights Samithi has urged the state Human Rights Commission to inquire into the inhuman treatment accorded to Govindankutty in the prison and take urgent appropriate steps.

Govindan Kutty: Row over HR activists’ visit to Viyyur prison

HRISSUR: Suspecting to be extremists, the police action to hold a group of five human rights activists who came to make a fact-finding study in the Central Prison at Viyyur, near here, on Tuesday kicked off a controversy.

Members of the group were PUCL state president P A Powran, editor of Hindi language monthly ‘Janaprathirodh’ published from Delhi, Raj Kishore, Tamil Nadu PUCl secretary K Kesavan, P A Shyna and Thusar Nirmal Sarathi from Ernakulam.

Later, reporters at the Press Club here on Tuesday, they said that they had come to Thrissur to visit Viyyur Central Prison and meet P Govindankutty, 65, editor of ‘People’s March’, who is on remand in the prison since December 20.

They said that Govindankutty was arrested from Aluva on December 19 . His bail applications were rejected both by the Aluva Judicial First Class Magistrate and the Sessions Court.

They said that the purpose of their visit was to obtain the signature of Govindankutty on a vakalath for filing bail application in a higher court and also to make a fact-finding study of his situation in the prison.

The human rights activists said that Govindankutty was fasting in the jail and the jail authorities indulged in forced-feeding of glucose after tying his hands and legs.

They said that Govindankutty had told them that the jail authorities were treating him cruelly. They said that the jail authorities told them that he was being forcibly fed as per orders from higher authorities and requested them to urge Govindankutty to end his fast.

However, Govindan Kutty turned down their request for ending the fast. They said that the group had gone to Viyyur Central Prison on Monday and had presented their identities to the jail authorities.

However, the jail authorities could not grant them permission to enter the jail as it was late in the afternoon. They were allowed entry to the prison on Tuesday and meet Govindankutty.

They said that during the meeting, they obtained the signature on the vakalath from him. However, when they came out of the jail, the Viyyur police, led by the Sub- Inspector, asked them to come to the police station, which they refused as the police had no warrant.

They said that when asked why they were wanted in the police station, the police told them that it was for the verification of their identities.

They said they had informed the police that their addresses and other identities could be verified from the jail authorities. They said that dissatisfied with their reply, the police was planning to detain them. However, somehow they managed to escape.

They said that they will demand withdrawal of the false case against Govindankutty and compensation for his illegal detention from the State Government.

Demand Immediate and Unconditional Release of People's March Editor, Com. Govindan Kutty

Save Live of Govindan Kutty who is on the 8th Day of a Hunger Fast

On December 19th the Kerala Police, under the orders of Ernakulum Police Commissioner, raided the room of Com. Govindan Kutty; confiscated all his literature and Hard disk and arrested him under a number of fake cases. He was harassed and interrogated for a day and and then sent to judicial custody. Since then he has been on a hunger strike which has entered the 8th day demanding his unconditional release. Given his age his life is in serious threat.

People's March is an independent revolutionary paper. It supports all revolutionary movements including the Maoist movements in India, Nepal and elsewhere. It is a fully legal publication registered by the Government of India with the RNI number KER ENG/2000/2051 and the postal registration number: KL/EKM/614/2007-09. Th magazine has been coming out for over 7 years meeting all the requirements of the government.

The arrest of the editor and the foisting of fake charges against him are nothing but an attempt of the GOI of India to further stiffle freedom of speech in the country. The so-called largest democracy in the world with a gigantic army, para-military and police force feels threatend by a mere monthly mgazine with a limited cirulation of a few thousands. It dispays the fascist character of the governemnet and the cowardly action of the Keralam police.

We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Com Govindan Kutty and allow the continued publication of People's March. We hold the governmnet entirely responsible in the face of any damage to his health or threat to his life due to huger strike within jail.
