Huge Maoist dump unearthed

ONGOLE: Police recovered an AK 47, nine-kg gold ornaments and Rs. 7.41 lakh in cash, allegedly stashed by Maoists in a dump in Prakasam district, in the wee hours of Sunday.
Acting on the information given by the arrested Maoist, N. Panduranga Reddy alias Sagar alias Pratap, the police made the recoveries, according to Superintendent of Police V. Navinchand.
Speaking to newspersons, Mr. Navinchand said that the police arrested Sagar on Wednesday and he was remanded to judicial custody for 15 days and sent to Cuddapah Central Jail.
Circle Inspector of Police, Yerragandapalem, on orders from the court, interrogated him in the jail when he confessed that he had dumped his AK 47, two magazines and 60 live ammunition at Pamulapadu village of Podili mandal in Prakasam district.
After obtaining court permission, the police took him into custody and brought him to Pamulapadu village where they recovered the weapon and ammunition.
During interrogation, Sagar further revealed that the State secretary of CPI (Maoist) had handed over to him the cash and jewels looted in Vemavaram and Morjampadu famine raids in Guntur district, Chaitanya Grameena Bank branch at Pedakonamgundla village also in Guntur district and State Bank of Hyderabad branch at Dondapadu in Nalgonda district for dumping.
Sagar dumped the gold jewellery and cash in Chintala Chenchugudem of Dornala mandal in Nallamala forest.
The police unearthed the dump and recovered 9.475-kg gold and Rs. 7.41 lakh in cash, all worth over Rs. one crore.
Mr. Navinchand said that the Maoists conducted famine raids ostensibly to carry away foodgrains for feeding the poor.
