64 politicians in Bihar resign after threats from Maoist rebels

Patna: Threats from Maoist insurgents have forced at least 64 district politicians in one of India's poorest states to collectively resign, officials said on Monday.

Officials from the National Democratic Alliance in the eastern state of Bihar quit their posts on Sunday after insurgents kidnapped 37 of them last week.

The Maoist rebels accused the officials of failing to check police abuses on local inhabitants.

A senior government official said many of the officials said they resigned because of threats to their lives.
