Arms seized from Maoist den

KODAIKANAL: Guns, bombs, bullets and other lethal items, valued at Rs 10 lakh and used by the Maoists who were hiding in the hilly terrains of Kodaikanal, were seized by the police.

A suspected Maoist Naveen Prasad (35) was killed in a shoot out with the police in the Vadakavunji jungles near Kodaikanal on April 19. Seven of his associates, including two women, managed to flee and some of them are reported to have sustained bullet injuries. Police teams, led by DIG Krishnamoorthy, conducted search operations in Poyyavazhi and Arungavanur jungle villages where the Maoists were holed up and seized a number of items.

Speaking to media persons here on Monday, DIG Krishnamoorthy said over 100 police personnel were engaged in the combing operations in Vadakavunji area. The teams had recovered two hand grenades, nine single barrel and double barrel guns, 34 electric detonators, electric wires, batteries, cooking utensils, medicines as well as Rs 12,000 in cash. He disclosed that these Maoists had escaped from Murugamalai area. There was no link between these fugitives and other groups, he said.
