Security beefed up in Purulia

PURULIA, March 13: The secretary of CPI (Maoist) state committee, Mr Him adri Sen Roy alias Somen categorically said that his arrest would not affect the party's day to day activities. A few leaflets, marked to release Somen, were found in different areas of Purulia, just before his arrival with officers of the CID, who brought Somen to Purulia town from Dum Dum Central Jail last week. He was produced before the acting chief judicial magistrate, Mr Anand Tewari when the CJM of Purulia court, Mr Zahir Ahmed reportedly was out of station. He was remanded police custody for 12 days, by the acting CJM, Mr Anand Tewari in connection with the blast of a constructing camp for the CRPF, at Gurpana in Bandwan of Purulia on 30 October 2005, allegedly by Maoists, as he was master-mind.
Earlier, the defence counsel, Mr Sagar Mondal moved a bail petition for Somen, which was rejected by the acting CJM, Mr Tewari. Speaking to media persons on the premises of Purulia Court, Somen bluntly said that he had never visited Purulia earlier. He further said his followers would continue the movement against the state machinery.
However, Somen also expressed his disliking of hijack, as a few persons marked in the leaflet to hijack him from the jail: “I don’t like it,”he said
A senior police officer added: “Somen had masterminded the brutal killings of the former Purulia Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati, Rabindranath Kar and his wife on the night of 30 December, 2006 at his village in Bandwan Block, just 15 km from Bandwan police station.”
It was also learnt that he planned the killing of CPI-M leader, Mahendra Mahato and officer-in-charge of Bandwan police station, Nilmadhab Das. As a result, the hardcore leader of CPI(Maoist), Somen was include in the “most wanted” list.
Police of Purulia district are now more cautious about the movement of Maoist supporters following the arrest and appearance of Somen in Purulia court. At least 13 Maoists are now in Purulia jail (correctional home).
While talking to The Statesman in Purulia town today, Mr Ashok Kumar Prosad, SP, Purulia said: “I shall not disclose the entire security plan that has been chalked out against the Maoists movement in Purulia district, but we have taken a close watch on the border of Jharkhand and West Bengal.” He further confirmed that they were ready to face any movement against any untoward incidents, including extremists operations. “Our force is ready to combat unexpected situations,” the SP of Purulia concluded: “Now police are more well- equipped.”
