Railway cops to conduct body identification camps in Bihar

Under a special drive for identification of unclaimed bodies found on railway tracks, the Government Railway Police (GRP), Haryana, will hold identification camps in Bihar.

A GRP team of about a dozen officials headed by the GRP DSP Hissar, Randhir Singh has left for Bihar to hold the identification camp there.

The team has taken articles like clothing, shoes, photographs, case files and other luggage recovered from the dead. The team is also equipped with photos of dead bodies, projector screens, DVD players, and DVDs for screening clips of the dead bodies on the demand of relatives coming for identification.

The special drive launched in Haryana earlier had drawn the attention of bereaved families from Haryana, Punjab and other neighbouring states. The GRP, however, felt that required success cannot be achieved since most of the deceased were suspected to be from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

In this regard, the GRP has decided to hold such identification drives outside Haryana.

The Haryana GRP SP Bharati Arora said that they were not disappointed and would pursue the matter outside Haryana for better results. She confirmed that a team headed by the DSP had left for Bihar. She said that one official from each of the GRP police stations had been sent for display and identification purpose.

Bharati, while providing details of the dead bodies disclosed that 45 unidentified dead bodies were recovered during April to July 2007, during which migratory labour from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and other states come to this region in search of employment and trains run overloaded.

Year-wise data points at 35 mishaps in the year 2002, 30 each in 2003 and 2004, 20 in 2005 whereas the figure jumped to 45 in 2006.

She, however, pointed out that relatives of the deceased failed to come for identification because of rampant poverty and illiteracy in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
