SILIGURI, March 28: Four Naxalite factions today courted arrest in the Siliguri Court premises protesting against the continuing hike in prices of all the essential commodities, including food items. Around 130 activists, including about 40 women, belonging to four factions of the Naxalites, were arrested.
The four Naxalite factions which took part in today's law violation programme were CPI-ML (Liberation), CPI-ML (Janashakti), CPI-ML (N-ew D-emocracy) and CPI-ML (Provisional Central Committee).
On behalf of the demonstrating Naxalite factions, Mr Abhijit Majumdar, the leader of the CPI-ML (Liberation) said that the Siliguri police had manhandled the women protestors. “Our women activists were kicked and slapped indiscriminately. There was no provocation from our side. We had informed the administration beforehand about our proposed law violation programme. Yet, the police tried to provoke us. We did not, however, fall in their trap and remained peaceful all through,” he added.
Mr Majumdar further said that their movement would continue against the Centre and the state government in view of their abject callousness in respect to the unabated spiralling of prices of essential commodities.
