Maoist violence on the rise in Orissa

NEW DELHI, March 10 (UPI) -- India says Maoist violence has increased in insurgency-hit Orissa state, killing 63 people last year.

An Interior Ministry statement said Monday the number of incidents of Maoist violence in Orissa and the number of resultant casualties during 2007 were 63 and 16 respectively.

In the statement, junior Interior Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal said the Interior Ministry includes districts hit by Maoist violence under the security-related expenditure scheme after a due process of consideration and approval.

The minister said four battalions of central paramilitary forces are deployed on anti-rebel duties in Orissa to assist state police forces.

"Three India reserve battalions have been sanctioned to Orissa. Assistance under the backward region grant fund is being provided for 19 districts of the state," Jaiswal said.
