Israeli youth detained at Pathanamthitta

PATHANAMTHITTA (Kerala): Zameret Shimri, 23, from Jerusalem was detained by the police here on Thursday when he was on his way to Chengara.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Sabu P. Idiculla, the Israeli youth, who claimed that he was a human rights activist, said he came to know about the ongoing land struggle at Chengara through media reports and wanted to visit the place.

Mr. Shimri first reached the Pathanamthitta Press Club to meet M.D. Thomas, Chengara Solidarity Forum convener, introducing himself as a worker attached to an Israeli non-governmental organisation.

However, Mr. Thomas, who was present at the Press Club, denied any association with the Israeli youth or any foreign NGO and asked him to seek permission from the local police before visiting Chengara.

Mr. Idiculla said Mr. Shimri also told the police that he was on a tourist visa to India and was staying at a hotel in Alappuzha. The police were verifying his credentials.
