India says rebels may use sea

NEW DELHI, March 5 (UPI) -- Indian security forces said some terrorist groups plan to bring arms and ammunition to India through sea routes.

Junior Interior Minister Radhika Selvi said the federal government was implementing a coastal security scheme to strengthen the infrastructure for patrolling and surveillance of coastal areas.

She said under the new scheme, the coast guard and police have been provided modern navigational and maritime equipment.

The minister said the government has so far made operational 73 special coastal police stations in 10 coastal states.

Intelligence agencies have also been asked to fine-tune intelligence-gathering mechanisms in view of the threat from the Sri Lankan Tamil rebels, the ministry said.
