KOLKATA: Five women have been arrested for putting up posters at Bagha Jatin station in the southern outskirts of the city demanding release of arrested Maoist leader Somen, police said on Monday.
The women- Kanika Debnath, Manju Mondal, Minu Saha, Puja Mondal and Bishnupriya Baidya - were apprehended last night after locals saw them putting up posters at Baghajatin station, in the neighbouring South 24 Parganas district, Superintendent of Police Parveen Kumar said.
The posters demanded release of the front ranking Maoist leader Himadri Sekhar Sen, known as Somen, and that he be declared a political prisoner.
The women, who were initially detained, were later arrested and charged with Section 121 IPC (anti-national activities), Kumar said.
Police earlier raided a woman's house at Sodepur in North 24 Parganas district, the SP said adding most of arrested women were from Bidhannagar and Maniktala in the northern parts of the city.
Posters and banners recovered from the women showed they were members of 'Nari Mukti Sangha'- the frontal women's organisation of CPM.
