NEW DELHI, March 29: To improve accessibility in Naxal infested regions, the Centre is working on an action plan to build roads through the Naxal affected states in the country.
Though the ministry of shipping, road transport and highways is entrusted with the task of development and maintenance of national highways, there are no separate schemes for development and repair of roads in Naxal affected areas. The government has now decided to initiate action “to prepare road requirement plan for the Naxalite affected states”.
The Union transport minister, Mr T R Baalu, recently informed the Lok Sabha that in 2005 the Orissa government had proposed construction of a 1632 km long road from Vijayawada to Ra-nchi, through the naxal-hit states of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Jharkhand.
The ministry approved the proposal for improvement of 13 km stretch of Hata-Tiring state road in Jharkhand, falling on the Vijayawada-Ranchi section, at a cost of Rs 9.18 crore under the Central Road Fund Scheme. The improvement work on the 598 km stretch of national highways had been undertaken in a phased manner, the minister said.
