12 Maoist guerrillas get punishment

DHAKA: Twelve suspected Maoist guerrillas were awarded death punishment by a court in Chuadanga district town yesterday in a triple-murder case.
Chuadanga Additional Sessions Judge Motahar Hossain delivered the verdict in a crowded courtroom, also fining the convicts 10,000 taka each.
According to the prosecution, Afzal Hossain, his son Alam and neighbour Monjer Fakir were shot dead and then slaughtered at Kutubpur village in Sadar sub-district of the district on May 28, 2004 afternoon over previous enmity.
Alam’s brother, Abul Kalam Azad, filed a case with Chuadanga Sadar police station the following day, accusing 23 persons.
After the triple murders, outlawed Maoist group Janojuddha claimed responsibility for the killings.
Police submitted charge sheet to the court on September 23 of the same year after investigation. The court acquitted eight others of the charge, as they were found innocent while three others died in â€کcrossfire’ with police during the trial
